What does AAIG stand for? How is it pronounced?
AAIG is an acronym for African Americans In Gerontology. It is pronounced the same as the word age (eyj).

When was African Americans in Gerontology founded?
We were founded in January 2009.

What is Gerontology?
Gerontology is the study of how people age sociologically, psychologically, and biologically.

Do I have to be African American to join AAIG?
No. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for African American elderly. Anyone who believes in the mission is encouraged to become an active member.

I am interested in becoming a member of your organization. Please elaborate on "disciplines that focus on the aged population," so that I may find my category.
Most disciplines have an area specific for the aging population. There are some that are more prevalent like Geri-physicians, Geri-psychologist, and Geriatric Care Managers. However, cosmetologists, occupational and physical therapists, and home health specialists are examples of what is considered as well. The list goes on and on.

Please explain the payment schedule for membership.
We believe that it would be unfair to join the organization at the end of one year and have to pay full fees a few weeks later. The membership schedule was designed to be fair to members depending on what time of year they joined. It is as follows: Jan 1- Apr 30= Full Fees  May1- Jul 31= 66% of Full Fees  Aug 1- Oct 31= 50% of Full Fees  Nov 1- Dec 31= 33% of Full Fees

What is the difference between Reverence Day  and Grandparents Day?
Not every elderly person is a Grandparent. That is the main difference. Reverence Day is a holiday that was created to acknowledge the “everyday,” elderly African American. There are definitely Trail Blazers in the African American community. Their accomplishments are often recognized.  There are those “everyday people,” who have bettered the community and are our “everyday heroes.” Their stories are often never told. Reverence Day is the day designated to celebrate these heroes, our African American elderly. Reverence Day is celebrated August 1 of every year.

Why did AAIG choose the color purple?
AAIG uses the color purple to symbolize royalty. Our African American elders are the kings and queens in our community and are regarded as such. Amethysts, like our African American elderly, are precious jewels.
