Reverence Day
Honoring Elderly African Americans Day was created by Aisha C. Young, M.A. and Kate Lane, M.A. As founders of AAIG, both noticed that there were no celebrations to honor African American elderly who have given to the community with their everyday contributions.
Reverence Day, August 1, is an annual celebration. On this day, please wear amethyst ribbons to show reverence and honor our African American elderly. It is also important to gather the oral history of your family and community from the elders on this day. AAIG uses the color purple to symbolize royalty. Our African American elders are the kings and queens of our community and are regarded as such. Amethysts, like our African American elderly, are precious jewels.
